About the author

I am a retired fourth grade teacher. To me, children are priceless treasures, and I loved the time I spent with my students in the classroom. I probably learned as much from them as they learned from me, and for that I am thankful. I believe all children should learn to read effectively and discover through their reading positive avenues for dealing with problems they encounter. They learn to read through practice and they find solutions through understanding the viewpoint of others. My middle grade novels are intended to do both.

What I Write

I write middle-grade novels for 8 to 12 year-old children. My characters are a composite of characteristics of children I have known and worked with in my classroom, placed in different settings and situations outside the classroom. They often make mistakes, and they don’t always make the choices we hope they would make, but I believe their intent is to do the right thing. They try to do the best they can with what they’ve been given by parents and society. At this age, they are not in control of their own lives.

Other Considerations

I love to read good fantasy stories, and I believe fantasy stimulates children’s imaginations. My stories don’t contain fantasy because that is not where my interest and strengths lie. I don’t believe in using off-color humor for this age group. They get enough of that on the playground. My novels, while not strictly Christian, do contain spiritual elements that offer one positive approach to making moral choices. Since children learn life skills by observing the consequences of their own or other’s choices, children’s literature offers a non-threatening opportunity to observe other viewpoints.

I hope that children reading my novels will see characters who are a lot like their classmates and friends, and possibly, like themselves.
